Book Review: Be My ValenSLIME

I am a grown woman who loves board books. Like, I REALLY love them. When my kids were toddlers and I would take them to the library, I'd beat them to the board book section every time and would be poring over them while they rolled around and played with blocks.

Sandra Boynton's "The Going to Bed Book" was beloved in our home, as it in many homes. Some of my best memories of having littles in onesie pajamas include reading that book to the point of memorization.

There's something about those thick, chunky books with vivid art and clever prose that are so charming.

Now, I also love Valentine's Day. It gives me the warm fuzzies and I look forward to store aisles being bathed in pink and red every year. Don't laugh. The chocolates, the sweetness...it's such a touching day for me with great memories of cut-out paper Valentines with little red lollipops attached from our elementary school days.

So when I saw, "Be My ValenSLIME" by Kris Tarantino (illustrated by Cori Doerrfeld), I knew I had to read it. Mind you, there is not one toddler or kindergartener in my home, but I had to soak up this adorable book.

I bought the Kindle version of this book, so I don't know how chunky monkey it is, but I can tell you it's truly special.

What attracted me to it was that it's not just your average silly children's book, it's all about breaking down 1 Corinthians 13 love in a way a child can understand.

If you don't know, 1 Corinthians 13 is a chapter that sets the standard for godly love.

"Love is patient, love is kind..." The bar is set high. I have some of these verses tucked away in my heart and the Holy Spirit will often remind me what love is and isn't when I'm being a little salty and snappy.

I really appreciate that this book is showing young children- in a really fun way- that love isn't simply a feeling, but a specific set of actions and a heart posture.

Love is kind. Love is patient. Love is not rude. In the story, a few messy monsters are learning these truths while celebrating Valentine's Day with friends.

I give this book 5/5 stars for being absolutely adorable while sharing how God wants us to love one another. If you're buying the e-book, keep in mind the images show up a little small on one's phone, but on an tablet, it would be a treat for any child. Who knows, maybe it'll end up being your new bedtime book.
